Best Bakeries in Birmingham

How We Selected the Best Bakeries in Birmingham?

Choosing a bakery is about more than simply looking at star ratings. Birmingham has a wide range of bakeries, from specialist sourdough producers and French artisan bakeries to bakery-cafés offering pastries, cakes, brunch and coffee.

For this guide, we considered several factors:

Quality & Baking Approach — We looked for bakeries with a clear focus on freshly made bread, pastries, cakes or other baked goods.

Specialisms — Particular attention was given to bakeries with distinctive strengths, such as sourdough, French baking, viennoiserie or artisan pastries.

Range of Products — We considered the variety of breads, pastries, cakes, savouries and related offerings available.

Experience & Reputation — Established businesses and bakeries with a strong local reputation were considered alongside newer independent options.

Customer Reviews — Publicly available ratings and review volumes were considered as part of the overall assessment rather than used as the sole ranking factor.

Accessibility & Location — City-centre convenience and accessibility from Birmingham's neighbourhoods were taken into account.

Overall Customer Experience — Where information was available, we considered the bakery-café environment, takeaway options, brunch service and other features that may affect the visit.

Birmingham's bakery scene has developed into a varied mix of independent businesses and specialist producers. Visitors can find everything from traditional sourdough and French-style breads to laminated pastries, cakes, brunch dishes and speciality coffee.

For people who enjoy artisan bread, the city has several bakeries with a particular focus on naturally fermented or traditionally produced loaves. Medicine Bakery, for example, makes sourdough and other breads alongside cakes and pastries, while Bread Collection has a strong emphasis on artisan bread and sourdough.

There are also bakeries that combine baking with a broader café experience. The Early Bird Bakery offers daily in-house pastries, cakes and savouries alongside brunch and speciality coffee, making it suitable for both a quick bakery visit and a longer breakfast or brunch stop.

Further afield, Levain & Cherry provides a distinctly French approach, while Loaf in Stirchley focuses on real bread, sourdough, pastries and community-focused food education.

This guide is intended for Birmingham residents, visitors and anyone looking for bakeries for everyday bread, pastries, cakes, brunch or speciality baked goods.

Please note: This guide is for general information and comparison purposes. Being included on this list does not constitute a recommendation or guarantee of a particular outcome.

I had a fantastic experience at Medicine Bakery Birmingham. I ordered the Halloumi Brioche with a cappuccino, and both were amazing. The brioche was fresh, full of flavour, and perfectly prepared, while the cappuccino was smooth and delicious. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff were very friendly and attentive. A perfect spot for breakfast or brunch. Highly recommended!

We stayed in Birmingham for an extra night just to go back here for a second time. Breakfast here is just the Medicine to start a day in a fabulous way. Dog friendly too. Staff are absolutely delightful.

When we called late afternoon we indulged in the best ever toasted teacake and a gorgeous raspberry tartlette. Bliss

Been here a couple times as I think these are some of the best pastries in the area in a friendly and comfortable atmosphere, I like that they always change their menu and whilst always having the classics there is always something new to try! (Including some interesting drinks!) I’ve had the pistachio croissant and sticky toffee pudding supreme during my visits. But I fear I need to try everything else!!

Not tried the brunch menu yet as it does look a little pricey, but I’m sure this reflects their quality as others have said

The food is amazing. Prices are a little high but overall I think the quality is very good so it feels worth it. The coffee is beautiful and the staff are lovely. I found the French toast too sweet with the syrup so an option of outing the syrup would have been better but otherwise I’ve always loved the food and will keep coming back. Highly recommend. It does get busy so be prepared to wait for a table.

It took us a long journey to get to the location, but it was a journey we willingly took for the amazing food this place provides. The guy behind the counter was extremely nice and friendly on a whole other level, and the food was better than we expected, and our expectations were pretty high so that’s saying something! Would definitely recommend and visit again and again .. we emptied the whole shelves and left maybe 2 pastries left? Sorry! 😅

Used to walk past this shop on my way to school, now I’m grown and have money I’ve been treating myself a little too often - but it’s been so worth it. Everything I have tried here so far has just been delicious. The bakes are beautiful and big in size, definitely worth the money!

I would say it's the most tasty passion fruit tart I've ever had. My son took me for a casual lunch during his work, and he asked me to choose something from this lovely place. To be honest, it made my day; I enjoyed every little bite of this artisan creation. Highly recommend!

Delicious croissants and the best cinnamon bun I’ve had in a long time. Don’t be put off by the lack of the pastries in the cabinet, they keep them behind :) very patient server whilst I waited for a text order

What an amazing bakery, this bakery reminds me of the European independent bakeries, with the smell of fresh pastries and warm staff. The decor is cool and the selection of pastries and sweet treats are just right. The cinnamon roll is my favourite
