How We Selected the Best Fine Dining in Birmingham?

We considered several factors when selecting restaurants for this guide:

Culinary Expertise — The experience, reputation and cooking style of the restaurant's chefs and kitchen team.

Quality of Cuisine — The quality, creativity and consistency of the food offered.

Dining Experience — The structure of the menu, presentation, service and overall restaurant experience.

Reputation — Public recognition, established reputation and feedback from diners.

Menu & Specialisms — Distinctive culinary styles, tasting menus, seasonal cooking and specialist approaches.

Customer Experience — Publicly available feedback relating to food, service, atmosphere and overall visits.

Location & Accessibility — The restaurant's location and practical considerations for people visiting Birmingham.

Birmingham's fine-dining scene offers considerably more than traditional formal restaurants. Across the city, diners can find contemporary British cooking, plant-focused tasting menus, modern Indian cuisine, seafood-led experiences and restaurants that take a more relaxed approach to high-end dining.

For anyone planning a special meal, choosing the right restaurant can depend on much more than its overall rating. The style of cuisine, menu format, atmosphere, location, dietary options and level of service can all influence whether a restaurant is the right fit.

This guide brings together five Birmingham restaurants that offer distinctive fine-dining or premium dining experiences. The selection focuses on restaurants with established reputations, strong public feedback, distinctive culinary approaches and a clear connection to the city's higher-end dining scene.

I recently had a business meeting in Folium. I parked in the NCP that's just around the corner from St Paul's Square as the roadside parking is limited to 2 hours. Upon entry we were able to leave our coats on pegs by the door. We were greeted by a kind lady whom showed us to our table, in the window. Before eating and drinking we were handed a face and hand cloth, which I thought was a nice touch. We at the 5 course lunch menu, which was very tasty. Just before we were served our puddings we were asked if we wanted the cheese board, which we did. Being honest, if we never had this, I would have left the restaurant still hungry. We were seated for around 2.5-3 hours and overall it was pleasant experience. There was a few empty tables and it was easy to talk.

Beautiful anniversary meal.

Food was pristine along with the wine pairing. Favourite of our meal was the cherry blossom and rhubarb dessert.

We opted for the long menu with the cheese selection, everything came out in satisfying portions that left us full at the end. The pace of meals served was just right.

Albatross is absolutely the best restaurant in Birmingham. My wife and I agree that the food was even better than any we had in Paris. We both are avid meat eaters but the presentation and flavours meant that we didn't even miss that it was fish and seafood. We got to try some foods for the first time such as oysters, smoked eel, dashi, and trout. It is well worth the money as a special occasion or to spoil a foodie.

Had a great time here with my wife, very intimate experience where you could see the food being finished in front of you and chat to each member of the team. Mainly seafood dishes but executed really well. My wife enjoyed her celebration meal here and nice to hear the process the chefs go through to create each dish. Quite different to other fine dining restaurants I've visited.

Went here with my wife for my birthday and there was a card from the team waiting on the table. The food was amazing I am still not sure which wa my favourite. The service was excellent with the staff explaining every dish. We will be visiting again soon.

We had a really great experience. We were initially worried that the non-alcoholic pairings might feel lesser compared to the traditional wine or cocktail options, but we were pleasantly surprised by how thoughtful they were. We really enjoyed learning about the different vegetables and fruits used in the dishes. Really enjoyable time. Would return.

Fantastic meal & service at the Lasan restaurant. Lovely greeting when we arrived from the restaurant manager Prajna who was very helpful and informative. Cocktails were ordered which were yummy. Starters & main were amazing, plenty of everything but not too much to overwhelm. Atmosphere was calm & inviting & the decor was sophisticated. Would definitely recommend & if visiting Birmingham again would come again.

I am so glad we booked Lasan today, was an extraordinary experience! We’ve been welcomed by a young and gorgeous lady Arusha and she was our host for the entire evening, very kind, friendly and attentive. She explained all the ingredients and details about the culinary culture. We’ve booked the 6 course testing menu and we enjoyed every single one, without leaving anything on the plate. Delicious, fresh, lots of flavours and when we thought we can’t eat the dessert , we’ve been so surprised to see how light and not even that sweet. We absolutely love it! Thank you!

Is this now the best restaurant in Birmingham? I think so. Amazing food cooked in an open kitchen by Glynn Purnell and his team. So nice to watch the preparation and delivery. We had the red prawn carpaccio, milk bread, tomato tart and the tempura monkfish cheeks which are divine. Followed by the grilled Red mullet and crab. Fabulous. Washed down with a delightful Chenin blanc. This really is an excellent quality restaurant with top notch service but still remains relaxed. Not inexpensive but superb for really spoiling yourself.

Much more relaxed, and smaller, than other fine dining/Michelin places in town and tucked away around the side of Snow Hill by the tramlines. Nothing subtle about the food; bold and quite big portions, everything delicious. Wine is really nice as you'd expect with the Loki association. It is dear obviously but the ingredients are top notch. Good atmosphere, liked it a lot.
